Stephen A. Szaybel graduated from Massena High School in 1937 and worked at an aluminium plant.

He was married to Jolanda Tepfenhart on 28 September 1940.

He enlisted in Utica, New York on 21 July 1944 and received his basic training at Camp Wheeler in Georgia and was sent overseas in January 1945.

Pvt Szaybel was reported wounded in action on 18 February 1945 after which he returned to his unit on 1 April 1945. For this wound he was awarded the Purple Heart Medal a first time.
