Sgt William D. Bentley graduated from Savannah High School and worked for the Strachan Shipping Company and the Railway Express Company.

He joined the National Guard in Savannah, Georgia on 10 February 1941.

He first served with an anti-aircraft unit in New Guinea. After returning to the U.S., he received infantry training and was sent to Germany on 6 January 1945.
