More information

S/Sgt Ignatius W. Hanneman worked on a farm before he enlisted in Toledo, Ohio on 13 April 1942.

S/Sgt Hanneman was awarded the Bronze Star for heroic achievement in Luxembourg on 19 January 1945. The citation reads in part: "On 19 January 1945, S/Sgt Hanneman led a combat patrol on a mission of locating and destroying an enemy machine gun near Kehmen, Luxembourg. When the patrol was fired on by an enemy machine gun, S/Sgt Hanneman crawled forward and hurled a grenade which enable his men to withdraw but not without leaving four casualties behind. After reorganizing the patrol S/Sgt Hanneman and a rifleman, disregarding the possible danger, returned to the men who had been wounded, rendered first aid and evacuated them."
