1st Lt Virgil R. Mc Alpin was a plumber.He enlisted in Chicago, Illinois on 18 March 1941.
Before going overseas in the fall to Europe, Mc Alpin served 27 months in the South Pacific as an intelligence officer with the 164th Infantry. While there he contracted malaria and was returned to the States. He later took advanced training in intelligence work at Camp Hood, Texas and in November 1944 was sent overseas.
His son was born on 20 February 1945.
