T/5 Harold C. Herbst graduated from Ypsilanti High School in 1941 and was employed at the Willow Run Bomber Plant at Ford Motors.

He enlisted in Kalamazoo, Michigan on 19 January 1943. He was on limited service because of his eyesight and was sent overseas in 15 October 1944.

He was taken prisoner of war on 28 November 1944 in Farébersviller, France and died in Stalag XII-A as a result of poor food and a forced march just before Germany surrendered.
