Because he spoke Spanish and English he was able to find work at the American Federation of Labor, the most important union in the United States in the first half of the 20th century.

He enlisted in Newark, New Jersey on 18 August 1942, first serving with the coast artillery. From January to October 1943 he served with various artillery regiments and followed specialized courses until reaching the rank of Technician 5th Grade in the specialty of radars.
