Pvt James C. H. Lemkey attended collegeand was a chauffeur with the Coastal Tank Line before he enlisted at Fort George G. Meade, Maryland on 9 May 1943.

He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for heroic service in France on 28 November 1944. The citation reads in part: On 28 November 1944, the company in which Pvt Lemkey served as a rifleman in an attack on the enemy, encountered fierce enemy resistance employing infantry and tanks. Pvt Lemkey and a companion volunteered to attempt to destroy a tank with Rocket Launcher fire. With utter disregard for his own safety, he crawled under the direct enemy fire to a flank position and was preparing to fire on the tank when he was mortally wounded by sniper fire.
