More information

S/Sgt Harold A. Stepputtis attended Lincoln High school before he joined the Regular Army at Fort Crook, Nebraska on 10 October 1940. He was sent overseas in June 1944.

He has been awarded the Silver Star Medal posthumously for his actions on the day of his death. The citation cited: Sgt Stepputtis was serving as an aid man with a rifle company engaged in the operation of enlarging a bridgehead. He received a painful flesh wound from shrapnel, but refusing to be evacuated, bound his own wound and continued his duties. Later a fellow soldier fell severely wounded on open terrain under direct enemy fire. With full knowledge of the dangers involved and without hesitation, Sgt Stepputtis crawled forward in an effort to rescue his stricken comrade. While on this heroic mission, Sgt Stepputtis lost his life as a result of enemy fire.
