1st Lt William B. Simmons Jr. graduated from Yale University and was a musician or music teacher before he enlisted at Fort Jay, New York, on 9 April 1942.

On 17 March 1945 he joined E Company of the 17th Replacement Battalion. On 26 March he was transferred to G Company.
