Pfc Homer E. Byrd was a miner before he enlisted in Abingdon, Virginia on 3 December 1942.

He was reported lightly wounded in action and evacuated to a hospital on the same day of his death. At that time his unit was engaged in the figting in the vicinity of Raucourt and Béchy, France.
