T/5 Thomas H. Paden graduated from Binghampton Central High School and was a cook when he joined the New York National Guard on 1 September 1937.

He reenlisted in New York City, New York on 28 October 1943. He was sent overseas in July 1944.

T/5 Paden was awarded the Bronze Star for heroic achievement in France on 25 November 1944. The citation reads in part: "On 25 November 1944, T/5 Paden, an aid man with a rifle company during an intense enemy barrage of mortar and artillery fire, with complete disregard for his own safety, administered first aid to the wounded men and assisted in their evacuation to a safe area in the rear."
