Pfc William J. Koziol graduated from Essex County Vocational School and worked for the Wright Aeronautical Corporation.He joined the National Guard in Passaic, New Jersey on 16 September 1940. After training at Fort Benning, Georgia, Camp Marshall, North Carolina and Camp Forrest, Tennessee, he was sent overseas in August 1944.
At the time, Pfc Koziol was killed, his unit was fighting in the vicinity of Mande-St.-Etienne and Flamisoul, Belgium. According to a German grave report, he was delivered already dead at an aid station in Ortho, where he was initially buried. He had suffered injuries from shell splinters in the stomach and both thighs.
