Thomas D. Harvey graduated from Cass High School in Detroit with the class of 1942.He volunteered for the Air Corps of the Army of the United States in Detroit, Michigan on 18 December 1941. He later volunteered for the paratroopers. He received training at Fort Benning, Georgia; Camp Forrest, Tennessee; and Fort Bragg North Carolina. He had been overseas since July 1944.
He left behind a 11 months old daughter, Gayle Eleanor. At the age of 20 months she died of tubercular meningitis
