Cpl Charles R. Heiby graduated from Bucyrus High School in 1940 and was employed at the Perfection Vault Company in Galion.

He enlisted in Columbus, Ohio on 9 January 1943 and received his paratrooper training at Fort Benning, Georgia. He was sent overseas in August 1944.

He was married to his wife shortly before leaving for overseas duty.
