Pfc Vance R. Stitzel enlisted in New Cumberland, Pennsylvania on 4 April 1944 and was sent overseas in October 1944.

He had contracted pneumonia and recovered in a hospital in Paris and was reported wounded in action on 7 February 1945 and had just recovered from this wound for two weeks when he was killed in action.

His brother, Sgt. Ray W. Stitzel, was killed in April 1943, in a plane crash with a bomber in Ellensburg, Washington.
