2nd Lt Daniel F. Hamilton graduated from East High School and attended the University of Utah.

He enlisted in Salt Lake City, Utah on 7 January 1943 and graduated from officers training school at Camp Davis, North Carolina in August 1943. He first served as an anti-aircraft artillery instructor at Fort Bliss, Texas and was transferred to the infantry in June 1944. He was sent overseas in October 1944.

He was reported wounded in action in December 1944. For this wound, he was awarded the Purple Heart Medal a first time.
