Pfc Philip G. Kaufman graduated from Port Hope High School in 1937.Philip had a great love of music, and learned to play the guitar by listening to the radio. He worked on the family farm until he was drafted into the US Army. His older brother Eugene, had already joined the US Navy.
He enlisted at Fort Custer, Michigan on 4 March 1942 and trained at Camp Cook, California, Camp Hood, Texas, Camp Breckinridge, Kentucky, Fort Bragg, North Carolina and Camp Pickett, Maryland. He was sent overseas in October 1944.
