La Von was born La Von Petersen. He took the name Huss when he enlisted.He graduated from Port Huron High School.
He enlisted on 8 July 1943 and had training at Fort Custer and Camp Grant. Then he took Air Corps training at High Point, North Carolina and Greensboro, North Carolina. He was transferred to the infantry and trained at Camp Pickett, Virginia before going overseas in October 1944.
