Pvt William A. Chadwick enlisted in Camp Shelby, Mississippi on 30 June 1943.

A graduate of the McComb High School, he was in the employ of the mechanical department of the Illinois Central Railroad prior to entering the service. He received his training at Camp Haan, Calif., and in Virginia Camp, first in anti-aircraft and later in the infantry. He married Edith Stevens on August 9, 1941. Pvt Chadwick was sent overseas on October 12, 1944. His brother, Pfc Norman E. Chadwick, served with a combat engineers unit in Belgium. Pvt Chadwick had been reported missing two weeks previously before he was reported killed in action.

His brother-in-law Edward Earl Stevens, U.S. Army Air Force, was killed in action over Europe on March 27, 1944 and is buried at Cambridge American Cemetery in England.
