S/Sgt William H. Hess attended Lyons High School and worked for the New York Central Railroad.

He enlisted in Syracuse, New York on 16 January 1941.

He was reported wounde din action by shrapnelt on 31 On March 1943in El Guitar, Tunisia and was sent back for five months treatment at Holloran and Valley Forge hospitals. He was sent back overseas in October 1944.
