S/Sgt Otto A. Rich graduated from Webster High School where he was an honor student. His ambition was to become a journalist and served as the Editor for the school's news. He attended Boston University for two years. In 1946, he was granted a posthumous Bachelor of Science degree in Journalism "Honoris Causa".He volunteered for the Army of the United States at Fort Devens, Massachusetts on 17 February 1943.
