More information

S/Sgt Bernard H. Irle enlisted in Chicago, Illinois on 30 June 1942.
He attended 1 year of college and was a bellman before he enlisted.

Sgt Irle, supply sergeant, against the advice of Capt Lockwood knowing the odds were against him, told the captain that “the company needs ammunition and that’s my job, Captain.” He then made the crossing and got the ammunition to its place, only to be wounded as the shell whistled in. On the return of the wounded including Sgt Irle, another artillery shell hit the boat directly which killed him.

Sgt Irle was first buried at Temporary American Military Cemetery Limey, France.
