More information

Pfc Howard E. Rhoads worked on a farm before he enlisted in Columbus, Ohio on 29 March 1943.

He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal posthumously. The citation stated: "For heroic achievement in connection with military operations against the enemy on 8 December 1944 in the vicinity of xxx. German machine and 20 milimeter guns, emplaced in a xxx pillbox, were trained on Company G's positions and were holding up its advance. In order to silence the guns, Pfc Rhoads patiently and with great effort, prepared a high opservation point in a roof of a barn and began harassing the enemy bunker with bazooka fire. The enemy, taken completely by surprise, was forced to button up the billbox and Company G was enabled to continue its forward progress."

He was first buried at the Temporary American Military Cemetery in Limey, France.
