More information

Sgt John Lynch employed by the Rhode Island Waste Co. before he enlisted in Providence, Rhode Island on 22 April 1943. He was sent overseas in December 1944.

He was awrded the Bronze Star Medal. The citation cited: For heroic achievement in connection with military operations against the enemy on 27 December 1944 in the vicinity of Fraulautern, Germany. Sgt Lynch seeing his platoon leader fall wounded and another squad leader killed by enemy fire, unhesitatingly rushed forward through a gauntlet of fire and carried the platoon leader to safety, returning shortly after to recover the body of the squad leader. On 12 April 1945, while outposted at a bridge in Husten, Germany, Sgt Lynch was mortally wounded while repulsing an attack by enemy troops attempting to infiltrate our positions. His complete devotion to duty typifies the highest traditions of the military service and reflects lasting honor on Sgt Lynch.
