More information

Pvt James W. Jones Sr. was a welder and flame cutter before he enlisted at Fort George G Meade, Maryland on 4 March 1944.

He was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross medal postumously. The citation cited:
"For extraordinary heroism in action against the enemy on 16 December 1944 in Wiltz, Luxembourg wheb his platoon was halted and pinned down by fire from a hostille machine gun to its front, Pvt Jones made his way through withering fire toward the enemy emplacement. When he was 75 yards from the machine gun, the enemy turned the full power of the weapon upon him. Undeterred, he continued forward until he was 30 yards away. Throwing two grenades into the emplacement, he rushed forward with his rifle, killing the crew and silencing the weapon. As he turned to signal his platoon forward, he was struck and killed by fire from a second enemy machine gun. By his unflinching valor and superb courage, Pvt Jones inspired his platoon to advance and capure its objective."

He was first buried at the Temporary American Military Cemetery in Ham, Luxembourg.
