T/Sgt Angelo Roma joined the National Guard in East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania on 17 February 1941. He received his basic training at Camp Livingston in Louisiana, trained at Camp Pickett in Virginia and Indiantown Gap, before being transferred overseas in October 1943.

He was also reported wounded in action in Belgium in September 1944, for which he was awarded one of his Purple Heart Medals.
