Pvt Lewis L. Gorrell attended high school for two years and was a truck driver before he enlisted at Jefferson Barracks, Missouri on 21 March 1944. He was sent overseas in October 1944.

He was taken prisoner and held in Stalag XII-A in Limburg an der Lahn, Germany. When Allied Forces advanced eastwards, this camp was evacuated and the prisoners were transported by freight trains to Stalag IX-B in Bad Orb, Germany. He died in this camp two months later from wounds received in action.
