Cpl Joseph F. Reif Jr. was taken prisoner on 22 December 1944 and died the hospital at Stalag III-B.

According to a letter dated 14 May 1948 from Major General H. B. Lewis of the War Department both his legs were amputated as a result of wounds received in action. He died of pulmonary embolism.

He was initially buried at the cemetery of Werder, Germany.
