Robert Ross attended Clarks-Summit-Clarks Green High School for three years and worked at the Lackawanna Trust Company in the maintenance department.

He enlisted on 17 February 1941 in Scranton, Pennsylvania and trained at Indiantown Gap Military Reservation, Camp Livingston, Louisiana, Camp Johnson, Florida and Camp Pickett, Virginia. He arrived in France in July 1944.
