More information

Pvt Verne F. Long was employed at Sager's Glove Factor in Chicago, Illinois.

He enlisted on 18 March 1943 and trained at Camp Butner, North Carolina. He was sent overseas in May 1944.

Per Lt Col Aubrey Akin, his batallion commander, in a letter to the Long family: "On the day Verne gave his life for his country he was participating with his company in their assigned mission of clearing a certain sector of Saarlautern - Roden, Germany of the enemy. In the skirmish that followed it was necessary to fight each house in the sector before the objective was reached. Verne was hit and killed by sniper fire as he ran from one building to another. Our medical aid man was at his side within a few moment after he fell but discovered that Verne died instantly."

On the photo he poses with his sister Doris.
