Pfc Don S. Mayham joined the Regular Army in Baltimore, Maryland on 25 November 1942. He was graduated from St. Francis Xavier Military Academy and also attended Johns Hopkins University, where he was a member of the Enlisted Reserve Corps from which he was called to active duty. He completed his basic training At Fort McClellan, and was assigned to the University of Pennsylvania to study engineering. He was a member of Delta Upsilon.

Pfc Mayham was first buried at Temporary American Military Cemetery Limey, France.
