1st Lt Robert Ryckman had served for four years with the U.S. Marine Corps before he joined the Regular Army in January 1940. He graduated from Officer Training School at Fort Benning, Georgia in May 1943 and was stationed at Fort Ord, California before he was overseas in September 1944.At the time of his death, his brother Emmett served with the U.S. Marine Corps.
