S/Sgt Charlton P. Sullivan Jr. attended high school for four years and was a gardener and ground keeper before he enlisted on 7 November 1942.
He was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross posthumously. The citation reads: For extraordinary heroism in action on 25 February 1945, near Ockfen, Germany, S/Sgt Sullivan and his platoon were halted by enemy machine gun fire while they were attacking a pillbox. Running forward under the bursts from the enemy guns, S/Sgt Sullivan was wounded several times, but killed entire pillbox crew with hand grenades. When another machine gun went into action. He fearlessly destroyed a second pillbox unit with hand grenades. Wounded again during his second victorious encounter, he died shortly thereafter.
