Pvt Richard J. Smith attended college for four years and was a chemist, assayer and metallurgist before he enlisted at Camp Blanding, Florida on 29 September 1944.
He died in a portable surgical, evacuation, or T/O convalescent hospital to the effects of artillery shell fragments.
