Pvt Howard J. Dietz attended high school for two years and was a janitor and sexton before he enlisted in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on 10 November 1942.

He was wounded in Bastogne, Belgium on 23 December 1944 and died in Luxembourg on 30 December 1944. The exact location is not known.

He was killed by artillery shell fragments to his head.

He was first buried at the Temporary American Military Cemetery in Grand-Failly, France.
