Pfc Clayton Baer attended high school for 3 years before he enlisted in Newark, New Jersey on 25 June 1943.
Pvt Baer was detached from his infantry company for a time and sent to work with the French underground around St. Nazaire as a liaison for the Americans. Speaking excellent French, he aided the French underground in maintaining contact with American troops surrounding the besieged Nazi strongpoint. At Christmas time he was sent back to his unit.
