More information

S/Sgt Roy G. Watson graduated from Western Carolina Teachers College and was the math and science teacher at Barnardsville High School. He also served as football coach for four years at Sylva High School.

He enlisted at Camp Croft, South Carolina on 5 December 1942.

S/Sgt Watson was awarded the Silver Star for courage displayed in action in January and February 1945. In one instance, Sgt. Watson exposed himself and ignored the fierce fire from enemy machine guns and small arms, crawled close enough to throw two grenades to destroy the gun and force the surrender of 15 Germans.

The Mark Watson Park, on the site of the former Sylva High School, is named in his honor.
