More information

Pfc Lewis R. Lyerly worked on a farm before he enlisted at Camp Croft, South Carolina on 17 August 1944. He was sent overseas in January 1945.

Per Chaplain Edward H. Harrison's letter to family: "We were on the big push to the Rhine through the Saar Palatinate. The company was attacking about 10:00 am through dense woods between Holzarath and Reinsfeld, Germany. We were having to take the woods from the enemy. There was much exchange of rifle fire. [He] was killed by rifle fire during that attack. He was shot through the chest and died instantly."

Pfc Lyerly is remembered at the Lyerly Evangelical Church Cemetery in Rockwell, Rowan County, North Carolina.
