Pvt Charles F. McCartney graduated from Central Catholic High School in 1944 before he enlisted in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on 11 August 1944.

A group of Germans approached the foxhole of Pvt Charles F. McCartney, on the extreme left of the platoon, and were challenged. Pvt McCartney opened fire and was killed by a return burst from an enemy machine gun.
