Pvt Charles F. McCartney graduated from Central Catholic High School in 1944 before he enlisted in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on 11 August 1944.A group of Germans approached the foxhole of Pvt Charles F. McCartney, on the extreme left of the platoon, and were challenged. Pvt McCartney opened fire and was killed by a return burst from an enemy machine gun.
