Pvt Leland I. Butler enlisted in May 1942 and was sent overseas in October 1943.

He was wounded in Normandy in June 1944 and recovered at a hospital in England.

He was reported missing in action on 18 December 1944 and was a prisoner of war in Germany for over three months. He was liberated by advancing Allied forces. He was recovering in a hospital but the cause of his death was not known.

He was initially buried at the Temporary American Military Cemetery of Solers, France.
