Pvt Butcher attended Vine Street School and graduated from Kalamazoo Central High School.

He enlisted in July 1942, being stationed at various points in the country until going overseas in August 1944.

He died of a severe wound in the left chest.

Pvt Butcher was initially buried in a temporary grave at Henri-Chapelle on 17 August 1948. He was given his final resting place on 2 February 1945.
