Pvt Lewis F. Foley graduated form Salesianum Catholic High School where he played basketball and baseball and was employed by the DuPont Company in the Traffic Department.He enlisted on 20 October 1942 in Camden, New Jersey.
He was well-known as a boxer and had taken part in the Golden Gloves tournament as a lightweight in Philadelphia. After entering the Army, he toured many camps in his country with Sergeant Joe Louis, former heavy-weight champion, helping to arrange and taking part in exhitition bouts.
He was instantly killed iwhen his jeep ran over an embankment while he and another soldier were returning from a successful scouting trip to locate German positions.
