Pvt Robert J. Whalen attended high school for two years and was employed at the Wright plant before he volunteered for the Army of the United States at Fort Thomas, Kentucky on 13 November 1942. He was sent overseas in December 1943.

He was first buried at the Temporary American Military Cemetery in Champigneul, France.
