Pvt Ernest R. Hart attended high school for three years before he joined the Regular Army at Fort Snelling, Minnesota on 16 September 1940.

According to the After Action Report an ambulance, which was clearly marked as prescribed by the Geneva Convention and in certain light at 0830, in which three men were riding, was hit by enemy fire at a road block at Villiers-Cotterêts.

He was killed by small arms fire in his chest.

He was first buried at the Temporary American Military Cemetery in Solers, France.
