Pvt William Barnes attended Croswell High School.He was a member of the Michigan State Troops before he enlisted in December 1943. He was sent overseas in July 1944.
He joined his unit from a Replacement Depot on 9 September 1944. He was lightly wounded in action on 30 September 1944 for which he was awarded the Purple Heart Medal a first time.
