James Wallace was fatally injured while returning to his ship at this port on the night of 21 February 1945. According to a statement made by the United States Naval Authorities, he lost his balance while alongside a dock, fell backwards, striking his head on the concrete steps below, and then rolled into the water. He was rescued by his companion, who called a hospital corpsman. Artificial respiration was given until the arrival of the medical officer and ambulance. Accompanied by a medical officer, he was taken to the United States Naval Dispensary at Querqueville at 11:10 pm. where he died 10 minutes later of a fractured skull. It is further stated by the United States Naval Authorities that his death was not the result of his own misconduct.

He was first buried at the Temporary American Military Cemetery of Blosville, France.
