Lt. Henry J. Fleagle served in the Army from 1931-1933. He reenlisted in 1939 serving at Ft. Riley and Carlisle.The citation for the Bronze Star Medal reads as follows: "For heroic achievement in the connection with the military operations against the enemy on 5 March 1945 near xxxxxx, Germany. When fifty German civilians, after evacuation, were fired upon by enemy mortar and artillery, First Lt. Fleagle proceeded immediately, alone and despite enemy observation, to the assistance of the civilians. Halfway to them he was fired upon by a German automatic weapon which pinned him to the ground for a short time. Extricating himself from this position, he proceeded to administer first aid to several wounded and to collect several wounded and to collect the scattered civilians to a place of comparative safety. Through First Lieutenant Fleagle's direction, treatment and evacuation was obtained for all wounded. First Lieutenant Fleagle displayed the superior qualities of courage, bravery and devotion to duty, in keeping with the highest traditions of the Armed Forces of the United States."
