Capt Trudell joined the U.S. Army Reserve at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

He was killed instantly when his jeep hit a teller mine just outside the city. Thrown from the vehicle in the explosion.

He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal posthumously. The citation cited: For meritorious service in connection with military operations against the enemy from 27 November 1944 to 8 March 1945, in the United Kingdom, France, Belgium and Germany. Capt Trudell distinguished himself by the highly meritorious manner in which he performed his duties. At all times he worked diligently and conscientiously to train his men into an efficient and effective organization.

Upon entering combat, Capt Trudell displayed unusual skill in the manner in which he guided his company. Throughout the entire period his display of the highes qualities of leadership and devotion to duty reflect the highest credit upon Capt Trudell and the armed forces of the United States.
