Sgt Curtis Field was born as Kurt Rosenfelder. He was brought to the United States in November 1934 by the Jewish National Refugee Society to escape the persecution of the Nazis and placed in the family of Mr. and Mrs. Nathan Fryer.

He graduated from Cleveland Heights High School in June 1939 and was a mechanic.

He enlisted at Fort Benjamin Harrison, Indiana on 23 June 1942.
