Sgt Walter J. Kelly attended James Madison High School and was employed in the pressroom of the New York World-Telegram.

He enlisted on 5 May 1942 at Fort Jay, New York.

He landed on Omaha Beach, Normandy on 6 June 1944. He was lightly wounded in action on 17 July 1944 but remained on duty.

He was promoted to Sergeant on 27 July 1944 and was again lightly injured two days later. Sgt Kelly was hospitalized in England. Soon thereafter he was returned to active duty on the Continent.
